Renewables accounted for nearly 60% of Germany’s power generation in 2024

According to preliminary results from the German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), renewable energy sources accounted for 59.4% of Germany’s electricity production in 2024. Renewable electricity generation reached an all-time high of 256.4 TWh in 2024, a 2.3% increase compared to 2023.

Despite a slight decline in output, wind power remained Germany’s largest electricity source. Wind power generation dipped by 1.4% compared to 2023, totalling 136 TWh. However, its share of total electricity production rose from 30.8% in 2023 to 31.5% in 2024. Solar energy saw a significant surge, with electricity generation increasing by 10.4% to 59.5 TWh. This brought solar power’s share of Germany’s total electricity supply to 13.8%. Hydropower generation also grew by over 10% to 20 TWh, i.e., 4.7% of the power mix. Coal-fired power generation fell by 16% to 22.5% of the power mix, and gas-fired power generation increased by 4.6M to 64 TWh, i.e., nearly 15% of the power mix.

In total, 431.5 TWh of electricity were generated in Germany in 2024, representing a 3.6% decline from 2023, due to a lower demand from industry and higher electricity imports.
