China’s National Energy Administration (NEA) has announced that China’s wind and solar power generation capacity surpassed its thermal generation capacity for the first time in March 2025. Solar and wind capacity surged to 1,482 GW at the end of March 2025, against 1,451 GW for thermal. The NEA said that in the first quarter of 2025, electricity generated from wind and solar surpassed 536 TWh, accounting for 22.5% of China’s total power use.
China had originally set a goal to reach 1,200 GW of solar and wind capacity by 2030, but reached this target in 2024, six years ahead of schedule. The country plans to peak emissions by 2030 and become carbon neutral by 2060.
