Italy’s electricity consumption remained stable in 2025, reaching 311 TWh, according to the country’s power transmission system operator Terna (Terna press release, 21/01/2025). In 2025, renewables covered 41% of power demand, compared to 42% in 2024, resulting from a record level solar generation and a return to normal of hydropower production after an exceptional level in 2024.
Domestic power generation, which increased by 2% in 2025 to 268 TWh, covered 85% of consumption, and net imports, which declined by 8% because of lower imports and stable exports, covered 15% of demand. Because of reduced imports and stable renewable generation, thermal production rose by nearly 5%, despite a 14% fall in coal-fired generation. Solar production increased by 25% to 44 TWh, while hydro production fell by 21% after record levels of generation in 2024.
Renewables capacity increased by 7.2 GW, raising the total installed capacity to 83.5 GW, with 43.5 GW of solar and 13.6 GW of wind. In addition, storage capacity increased by 1.7 GW reaching a total of 7.4 GW/17.9 GWh.
