Türkiye aims to increase solar and wind capacity to 120 GW by 2035

Türkiye has announced that its solar and wind capacity has exceeded 40 GW and should increase to 120 GW by 2035. According to the announcement, the country reached a total installed capacity of 123 GW at the end of January 2026, with solar and wind representing 41 GW or about a third of the total capacity. To reach its 120 GW wind and solar target by 2035, the Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister announced plans to build between 8 and 10 GW of solar and wind capacity every year by awarding at least 2 GW of renewable capacity per year through its auction scheme

The country has also signed an intergovernmental agreement with Saudi Arabia to develop two solar power plants (the Sivas and Taseli projects) in central and southern Türkiye, with a capacity of 1 GW each. The country expects to start construction on both projects by the end of 2026, aiming to start operations by early 2028. An additional 3 GW are expected to be developed afterwards in partnership with Saudi Arabia’s ACWA company as part of their agreement.

The expansion on these technologies is aligned with Türkiye’s strategy to diversify its power mix, promote energy security and cut dependence on imported fossil fuels. The country also reiterated its goal to reduce CO2 emissions by 41% by 2030, reaching net zero by 2053.
