Italy’s Enel records 7.5% decrease in power generation during 2024

The Italian energy group Enel has released its operational results for 2024. Enel registered a total consolidated installed capacity of 81 GW (-0.4 GW) due to a decrease in thermal (-1.5 GW), hydro (-0.6 GW), wind (-0.1 GW) and geothermal (-0.1 GW) net efficient installed capacity. However, the company saw a 2% increase of its renewable capacity, reaching 56.6 GW installed, thanks to the increase of net solar capacity (+1.9 GW), mainly in Brazil, North America, Colombia, Spain, and Italy.

Enel’s total power generation decreased by 7.5% in 2024 to 191.87 TWh, due to a reduced thermal power generation (-21 TWh, mainly from CCGT (-10 TWh) and coal (-8.4 TWh)) that was partly offset by a higher renewable generation (mainly hydro and solar). Electricity sales fell by 9.1% to 273.5 TWh, due to the sale of its retail activities in Romania (-6.8 TWh) and Peru (-7.3 TWh), the lower energy consumption in Italy (-13.5 TWh) and Spain (-3.3 TWh), and the end of the regulated market in Italy and Argentina (-0.5 TWh). However, Brazil (+3.3 TWh), Colombia (+0.4 TWh) and Chile (+0.3 TWh) presented a higher energy consumption. The company distributed 481.2 TWh of electricity in 2023 (-1.7%), of which 217.4 TWh in Italy (+1.5%) and 263.8 TWh abroad (-4.2%). Gas sales also saw a decrease of 14.5% to 7.1 bcm.
