The Italian energy agency Gestore dei Servizi Energetici (GSE) has published the results of its 16th auction for renewable capacity under Italy’s new renewable support scheme. The auction was oversubscribed, as a total quota of 384 MW but 129 bids totalling 498 MW were submitted. In total, Italy awarded 458 MW of solar, wind and hydro capacity across 112 bids, including 424 MW for 57 projects above 1 MW.
This 16th auction is the first renewable auction in a while to be oversubscribed, as previous auctions were all under-subscribed. This is notably due to the lowering of the initial proposed quota. In Italy’s previous auction for renewable capacity (15th) in October 2024, a total quota of 534 MW was offered but only 459 MW was submitted, with 433 MW awarded. Previous auctions were even more largely under-subscribed : 296 MW awarded out of 689 MW offered for the 14th; 1,041 MW awarded out of 1,628 MW for the 13th; 103 MW awarded out of 1,731 MW for the 12th.
Italy targets 55% of renewables in its power mix in 2030 (38% in 2023). In 2023, renewables accounted for about 52% of Italy’s installed capacity.
